LEVEL UP YOUR MINI PAINTING
INTRODUCTION
I’m Stu, Senior Painter at Tesseract Miniature Studios in Leicestershire. You may have spotted our little YouTube, or you may know us as studio painters for Wyrd Miniatures, Steamforged Games, Great Escape Games or Modiphius Entertainment. I’ve been painting miniatures since way back when in 1991, and whilst my professional background does include fine art/traditional painting, I’m an almost entirely self-
taught painter.
My hope is to bring you together to show you how to push past that basic tabletop level, and start todevelop the tools you’ll need to express yourself. If you’re bored of the basecoat, wash and edge highlightlifestyle, this class is definitely for you.Of course, I am assuming here that you have at least some experience as a painter. Whilst the class isfocused on simplicity, it’s definitely not for a first-timer.If you have any further questions about the class, or any of our other services, feel free to go towww.tesseractministudios.com/contact or just email me directly, at hello@tesseractministudios.com
COURSE OVERVIEW
This class is a brush only class – all techniques shown will be painted with traditional techniques and acrylic paints.
Section 1: Demystifying the colour wheel and selecting colours for your model. Why mixing matters.
Free painting time: Basecoat your model.
Section 2: Volumes and noise. Techniques for lighting your miniatures purely for high impact. Glazing,
stippling, wet-blending – when and why.
Free painting time: Work in highlights on the main components of your miniature.
Section 3: Refining to finish. Non-metallics and why they’re not scary. The difference between done and perfect.
Free painting time: Finish all main sections on your model, to a good level of refinement.
Section 4: Embellishment – simple techniques that will push your miniatures further.
Free Painting time: Add rust, Verdigris, OSL etc, as desired. Base your model.
WHAT'S SUPPLIED
The Knowledge: Stu Will be on hand throughout the class for direct one-on-one guidance and Q&A. If you need
Stu at any point during free painting time, you can just shout him over and he’ll come and help.
The Mini: To help make things as universally transferrable as possible, we’ll supply everyone with a copy
of the same miniature, pre-undercoated and ready to go.
The Base: Towards the end, we’ll explore the option of display basing Vs tabletop basing. If you want to
base the model for tabletop use, we’ll include a base.
WHAT WILL YOU NEED TO BRING
Your Paints & Brushes: Bring your favourite colours, bring primaries and secondaries, browns, black and white.
You won’t need washes or metallics for this one, but it would be smart to bring some kind of medium (GW
Lahmian Medium or AK Glaze Medium would be my choices).
A Light: Preferably the clampy type, with a bright daylight rated bulb, or diffused LED bank.
Wet Palette: Or a dry palette, whichever you prefer.
Watercup: Bring a couple – that way you can use the two-wash technique!
Basing Materials: I will bring some flock, bark chips, cork, glue, etc – you’re welcome to use a bit, but if
you have your own preferred materials, it’s definitely better to bring them.
Clippers/Knife: More for the basing section than anything else.
Display Plinth (Optional): If you wish to display base your model, please provide your own plinth.
4-Gang Extension Lead: I can’t promise that power distribution in the venue will be ideal, so it would be
smart to bring your own extension lead, to make sure you can power your stuff. I’ll bring a couple too.
Something to Take Notes on: Pad and Pen, Tablet, laptop... dealer’s choice!
GENERAL NOTES ON THE CLASS
As a teacher I’m very informal and friendly – I’d rather you feel comfortable and relaxed whilst we paint
and learn together. That said, I won’t tolerate bullying, harassment or discrimination in my classes.
Whilst we’re presumably all adults and a bit of colourful language and grown-up humour won’t hurt
anyone; you will be asked to leave if the organisers deem you to have crossed the line of decency.
The aim of this class won’t necessarily be to finish the miniature – if you don’t get it all done in the time
provided, that’s fine. It’s far more important that you spend the time to grasp and replicate what’s shown,
than it is to have a finished mini at the end. After all, there’s nothing stopping you from finishing the
miniature at home!
Lastly – Whilst I have a wealth of both painting AND teaching experience, I’m quite new to teaching
painting. As such, your feedback is more than welcome – so please, drop me a message or an email after
the class and let me know how you found it.
Look forward to seeing you all there, and helping you bust down some walls!
